Shaquille O’Neal was a dominant center in the NBA for over a decade. He is most well-known for his prowess on the basketball court, but Shaq was also an incredible athlete. One of the things that set him apart from other players was his vertical leap. Shaq could jump out of the gym and grab rebounds over taller players. This attribute was on full display during his time with the Orlando Magic. In 2000, Shaq won the Slam Dunk Contest by jumping over 7-foot-1 center Frederic Weis and slamming it home. His vertical leap is still talked about to this day.
In 1992, Shaquille O’Neal entered the NBA as a rookie for the Orlando Magic. He was an instant success, winning Rookie of the Year honors. O’Neal continued to play well for the Magic, but they failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs. In 1996, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
With Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson, O’Neal finally won his first championship in 2000. The Lakers went on to win three more championships in 2001, 2002, and 2003. O’Neal was named MVP of the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2004.
In 2004, O’Neal left the Lakers and signed with the Miami Heat. He helped lead them to their first championship in 2006. The following year, he led Miami to their second championship. O’Neal played for the Phoenix Suns in 2008, but he was traded to the Indiana Pacers before the end of the season. He retired from playing in 2010. O’Neal’s 20.0 rebounds per game average is the highest in NBA history, as is his 23.1 points per game average. O’Neal also holds the record for most games played (17). O’Neal was born in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in Belleville Township, New Jersey. He attended Lincoln High School in East Orange, New Jersey, where he was a two-time All-American and won the Mr. Basketball Award. O’Neal was highly recruited out of high school, and played one season of college basketball for the Indiana University Hoosiers. He was the number one pick in the 1991 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic.
